In Ethiopia, Lucy fossil refers to a female hominid skeleton found at Hadar - about 300 km north of Addis Ababa - in the Awash valley of Ethiopia's Danakil Depression in the Afar Triangle, that was discovered in 1974 by Donald Johanson. One of the most fossil-rich and well known sites in paleoanthropology, the Hadar Research Area is located ~300 km northeast of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The name Hadar derives from the nearby Kada Hadar tributary that feed into the Awash River 1,2 . On November 24, 1974, paleoanthropologist Donald Johanson spotted something odd poking out from a dry gully within the archeological site around Hadar, Ethiopia.
